As a first generation college student with two migrant parents, the college application process had always seemed intimidating. I had no idea where to start, and I felt completely overwhelmed. 

But from our first meeting, Nick began to put my fears at ease. He formed a realistic and manageable action plan for me to navigate the many intricacies of the application process. His guidance shifted a once seemingly impossible process into a structured—and even exciting—journey for me. 

Through our meetings and the many activities Nick planned for me, I learned how to look inward and dig deep into my ambitions and life experiences so that I could discover the most meaningful topic to write about.

Nick helped guide me to convey my true self throughout each essay, giving constant feedback along the way. With patient guidance and thoughtful questions, he led me to articulate my aspirations and shape my ideas into meaningful essays.

Just like countless other high schoolers, college applications initially terrified me. I always knew NYU was my dream school, but I could never have imagined that with the right help, I could actually make it come true. Being surrounded by students who had “everything figured out” was very intimidating to me, as I myself didn’t know how to navigate applications, or even where to start. Nick made the college application process very smooth for me and relieved the anxiety of not knowing where to start or how to word things on my application. From listing my activities to editing my essays, Nick was very detail oriented and thoughtful about the best way to convey a message. 

I’ve also always struggled with writing but Nick gave very helpful and specific feedback that made the writing process very smooth. In addition, he is very organized, so you always know exactly what should be done and when it should be done, which was very helpful for me.

College applications are definitely one of the hardest and most stressful parts of high school. However, Nick made it one of the easiest and most meaningful parts of my high school journey. When I started the application process at the beginning of senior year, I was super overwhelmed and confused about where to start, and I felt extremely behind compared to my peers. The college application process is a beast. It feels like life or death, with everything hanging in the balance. When I started the process I was overwhelmed. Applying to film schools is hard, but applying to prestigious film schools, that have the vibe and the oddly specific major you want, feels near Herculean. 

I was lucky enough to find Nick. He helped me stay motivated and refine my ideas. With his help I was slowly able to hack away at the mountains of work. He took the hordes of thoughts bouncing around my head and, through a lot of questions and conversation, helped me weave them into a specific and well thought-out vision.

At the beginning of my college process, I was lost. I was naive and convinced I could manage my applications on my own, but I was very very wrong. One of my biggest struggles throughout the college application process was knowing where I stood. One day I wanted to apply to Harvard, and the next to schools I'd never even heard of. Throughout the process, Nick went beyond the role of a college counselor—he was a friend. He constantly reassured me that I could get into top institutions, and he was right! Without him, I absolutely would not have been able to get into my dream school.

What I particularly liked about Nick's approach to the college application process was that he is both efficient and creative. At every meeting, I would come to him with about ten colleges to go over—that's a 40-page document—and somehow, he got through it in an hour every single time, while still giving useful feedback.

Additionally, his feedback helped me bring my personal statement to the next level. The original draft I was going to submit was based on a metaphor—the advice he gave is something I still remember to this day: "If you can write the same plot without the metaphor, scrap it." After that, all of my essays—not just the personal statement—became so much more efficient and clear.

Throughout the entire college application process, Nick was simultaneously kind, flexible, and made the process fun. I strongly recommend that anyone reading this hire Nick Soper as their college counselor.

As a senior in high school, I applied to a few of my top choices for college and was disappointed to be waitlisted to almost all of them. I was applying blindly, without any real notion of how to create a successful application. I made the decision to take a gap year and apply again to my top choice, Northwestern, in the Early Decision pool.
